AMMONNEWS - A Jordanian student who was studying in a Syrian university died on Thursday of wounds he sustained from being tortured by Syrian authorities after he was kidnapped from his home in Latakia three weeks ago.

23-year old Thamer Badareen was kidnapped from his home by a group claiming to be security forces, and was later dropped at Misyaf Hospital in Hama, where he died of wounds he sustained from being tortured.

The family is attempting to transfer his body to be buried in Amman today.

Badareen was a medical student at Tishreen University in Latakia, and had went there three weeks ago to take his exams. The family lost contact with him the next day.

A colleague of his informed the family that a group claiming to be official security authorities of the Syrian regime came looking for the 'Jordanian student' and took him to an unknown destination.

Efforts by the family and Jordanian Embassy in Damascus failed in getting any information on his whereabouts, or get an official response from authorities there.

Jordanian Ambassador in Damascus Omar al-Amad told Ammon News two weeks ago that he used all diplomatic channels with the Syrian foreign Ministry, but got no response regarding Badareen's whereabouts.

Lawyer Samih Khreis also attempted to help by contacting authorities in Damascus, but later received a phone call informing him that "Syrian security forces liberated" Badareen and a group of kidnapped individuals from the hands of unidentified "armed gangs."

Khreis was told that the Syrian security forces took Badareen to Misyaf Hospital in Hama.

Badareen had sustained serious wounds from tourture and fractures in his head, before he died early Thursday morning.
