Ahmad Shafiq Sworn in as PM, Omar Suleiman as Egypt's VP

Ammon News - AMMONNEWS - Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak appointed Omar Suleiman as Vice President.

Suleiman was sworn in on Saturday evening, Egyptian state television reported.

Suleiman was head of the Egyptian General Intelligence Directorate (EGID) since 1993, and was formally a minister without portfolio. He was dubbed as one of the world's most powerful spy chiefs, and ranked by Foreign Policy magazine last year as the Middle East's most powerful intelligence chief, ahead of Mossad chief Meir Dagan.

Also on Saturday, Ahmad Shafiq was appointed Prime Minister and sworn to succeed former PM Ahmad Nathif who who submitted his resignation late Friday night following waves of nationwide protests.

Shafiq was the Civil Aviation Minister in the outgoing cabinet and former commander of the Egyptian Air Force from 1996-2002.
