Arab Water Council meets at Dead Sea to discuss water security

Ammon News - The 16th session of the Arab Ministerial Council and the 6th Arab Water Conference will kick off at the Dead Sea on Wednesday. The conference will discuss, in successive sessions, the executive plan for the water security strategy in the Arab region to meet future challenges and requirements for sustainable development 2030, Arab preparation for global water forums, and Arab cooperation in exploiting shared water resources.

Last Sunday, the Arab Water Council (AWC) opened a Preparatory meeting in its 16th session at the Dead Sea ahead of the sixth Arab water conference due to be held on Wednesday under the umbrella of the Arab League.

Ministry of water and Irrigation Secretary-General Jihad Mahamid said the AWC Technical Scientific Advisory Committee tackled the executive plan of the water security strategy in the Arab region to address challenges to sustainable development 2030, as well as presentations by the Arab Center for the Studies of Arid Zones and Dry Lands (ACSAD), the Economic and Social Commission for Western Asia (ESCWA), the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO), the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO), and the International Water Management Institute ( IWMI).

The session tackled the implementation of the 2030 Sustainable Development Plan in Arab countries, sixth goal indicators, preparations for global water forums, cooperation in exploiting shared water resources, in addition to the regional initiative on the interconnection between the water, energy and food sectors.

In its three-day meeting, the technical committee will discuss other items, including strengthening the negotiating hand of Arab countries that share water resources with non-Arab countries, expanding use of non-traditional water sources, developing the Palestinian water sector, supporting Iraq's rights regarding the preservation of water resources in the Tigris and Euphrates basin, and legislation regulating the water sector.
