Ammon News - The Higher Population Council (HPC) has clarified that the increase in divorce cases reflects the natural rise in marriages, dismissing concerns over an alarming trend.

The council noted in a statement Monday that while divorce cases have risen in number, this mirrors the expanding population of married couples and new families each year.

According to official data from the Chief Islamic Justice Department, the divorce rate in Jordan has remained stable over the past nine years, averaging around 2.5 divorces per 1,000 people annually.

The marriage-to-divorce ratio also holds steady, with four marriages occurring for every divorce after consummation.

The report highlighted that 27% of divorces involved marriages that were annulled before consummation, a factor that increases the likelihood of remarriage for women. Roughly 19% of remarriages over recent years involved women who experienced pre-wedding annulments.

In 2023, reversible divorces those where couples have the option to reconcile made up 26% of all cases, while 45% of divorced women were under the age of 30, indicating a higher incidence of divorce among younger couples.

The council also advised newlyweds to consider postponing their first child. Addressing early marriage, the report showed that marriages involving girls under 18 remain relatively low, with divorces among this group comprising just 4% of total divorce cases.
