Ammon News - UNESCO reported that most journalist murders around the world go without punishment, as stated on the International Day to End Impunity for Crimes against Journalists. As per the report, Audrey Azoulay, the Director-General of UNESCO, stated that from 2022 to 2023, a journalist lost their life every four days while performing their duty of uncovering the truth, with most of the cases going unpunished.
It emphasized that 85 percent of the journalist killings reported by UNESCO since 2006 are still unresolved, with the State of Palestine seeing the most journalist killings worldwide in 2023.
In this situation, the UN Secretary-General, António Guterres, stated in a message: "There has been a concerning increase in deaths in conflict areas, with Gaza experiencing the highest number of journalist and media worker fatalities in any conflict in years."
Guterres highlighted that the Charter for the Future, which was approved in September, emphasizes the importance of honoring and safeguarding journalists, media professionals, and related personnel in armed conflict zones.
He urged governments to act quickly to safeguard journalists, examine crimes against them, and bring their offenders to justice worldwide.
