Ammon News - A woman who said she felt she had no choice but to give up her baby son when she gave birth aged 17 has been reunited with him 57 years later. Paula Beer, a 74-year-old retired council worker from Bridgend, spent decades looking for her son after she’d spent just three days with him in hospital before he was adopted.
Paula said she had been scared of what her parents would do if she’d told them she was pregnant. She explained how she concealed her pregnancy while working long hours in a grocery store in Porthcawl, and only saw a doctor when she was eight months into her pregnancy. Towards the end of her pregnancy Paula stayed with her aunt in Essex who helped her arrange the adoption.
In an interview with FEMAIL Paula described it as a “very bad time” in her life. “From the moment I held him in my arms for the first time the love I felt for him was unbelievable,” she said. “I didn’t think I would feel like that, and I knew I had to part with him. So I didn't want to feel like that.”
Despite going on to marry and have a daughter, Paula said she didn’t anticipate the pain she would feel having given her son - who she named Paul but has since been renamed Jim - away. Before finding Jim Paula said: “Every year on his birthday I light a candle for him and watch the candle burn as I pray to God: ‘Please let me find him one day.’”
