Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs and Expatriate Affairs, Ayman Safadi, presented Jordan’s oral pleading before the International Court of Justice (ICJ) in The Hague, regarding the advisory opinion requested by the United Nations General Assembly from the Court pursuant to Resolution No. 77/247, which was issued on 12/30/2022 regarding "Israeli practices that affect the human rights of the Palestinian people in the occupied Palestinian territories, including East Jerusalem."
Safadi said, "I stand before you today while the bloody and inhumane evils of the Israeli occupation appear."
"In Gaza, Palestinians are dying due to the Israeli aggression, and they are dying of hunger due to the loss of food and medicine, which Israel continues to prevent from Gaza, in violation of international humanitarian law, and in defiance of the measures ordered by your court," Safadi added.
"No country should be above the law. But Israel does not care, and has been allowed to not care about international law. This situation cannot continue," he stressed.
Safadi also pointed out that the occupation is unlawful. It is inhumane. It must end.
The number of settlers rose from 280,000 in 1993, when the Oslo Accords were signed, to 700,000 today, meaning an increase of more than 150%, he noted.
The Foreign Minister also said that Israel is imposing dempgraphic change in the occupied Palestinian territory; It destroys the historical and cultural heritage. Palestinian land is confiscated; It expels Palestinians from their homes, fields, villages and cities, and violates the right of Muslims and Christians to worship.
Safadi stressed that peace is a right for all the peoples of the region, but there is no peace unless the occupation is removed and there is no peace without fulfilling the right of the Palestinian people to self-determination, through the embodiment of the independent, sovereign Palestinian state, with East Jerusalem as its capital on the lines of June 4, 1967, so that it may live in secirity and peace alongside Israel, and through the world’s recognition of this state.
For the sake of peace and for the sake of justice, Safadi stressed that Jordan will not budge in its efforts to protect the Islamic and Christian sanctities in occupied Jerusalem and preserve its identity. These are our responsibilities towards the holy sites under the historical Hashemite custodianship over them, and our special role towards them.
Safadi concluded by saying, "The brutality that tortured and killed Hind is a permanent reality under the occupation. This brutality must end. Rule that this brutality must end. Rule that the occupation, the source of all evil, must end."
