FM receives UNRWA Commissioner-General

Ammon News - Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs and Expatriate Affairs, Ayman Safadi, stressed Thursday the need for the international community to take immediate steps to support UNRWA.

UNRWA plays an indispensable role for Palestinian refugees and represents a lifeline for more than two million Palestinians facing an incurable humanitarian catastrophe. unprecedented in Gaza, Safadi said.

Safadi stressed, during his meeting with UNRWA Commissioner-General Philippe Lazzarini, that no other party is capable of carrying out the main role that the UNRWA plays in Gaza.

Safadi warned that any reduction in financial support provided to UNRWA would immediately reflect deeper suffering for the people of Gaza, who are facing mass starvation due to Israel’s denial of entry to their minimum humanitarian needs.

Safadi and Lazzarini discussed the challenges facing UNRWA and the accusations brought against 12 of its employee in Gaza.

Lazzarini confirmed that the agency began an immediate investigation into the accusations and terminated the contracts of the accused employees.

Safadi and Lazzarini also called on the countries that suspended their aid to the agency to reverse their decision.
