UK assumes UN Security Council presidency for July

Ammon News - The United Kingdom, as of Saturday, will assume the rotating presidency of the UN Security Council for the month of July, succeeding the United Arab Emirates.

The UK Permanent Representative to the United Nations, Ambassador Barbara Woodward, will hold a press conference on Saturday evening to brief accredited press on the Council's work program after approving it by the Security Council in the morning session of the same day.

The Council consists of 15 countries, each with one vote, five of which are permanent members, and have the right to veto and they are: the United Kingdom, Russia, China, France, and the United States of America, and ten non-permanent member states elected for two years by the General Assembly and they are: United Arab Emirates, Switzerland, Mozambique, Malta, Japan, Ecuador, Gabon, Brazil, Ghana, and Albania.

The Security Council is one of the six main bodies of the United Nations, which includes the Secretariat, the General Assembly and the International Court of Justice, in addition to the Trusteeship Council and the Economic and Social Council.
