Gov't vehicle tracking system saves JD4.2mln since 2017

21-03-2023 04:07 PM

Ammon News - A project to monitor government-owned vehicles via GPS has saved over JD4.2 million since its launch in 2017 until the end of 2022, according to Minister of Public Works and Housing, Minister of Transport Maher Abul Samen.

The Government Vehicle Tracking Project's goal is to ensure that vehicles are only used by official institutions, according to a statement released Tuesday.

The government has also redistributed 180 vehicles, which were not previously in use, to public entities to save money instead of buying new ones, Samen said, adding that the ministry and concerned entities have adopted new criteria to move to energy-saving vehicles.

He stated that the project has saved over 35 percent of operating costs after the ministry took a series of measures, including banning the registration or licensing of government-owned vehicles outside the tracking system and tracking violations by drivers in cooperation with concerned authorities.

The project also provides transport for public-sector employees under a public-private partnership in order to reduce CO2 emissions and traffic jams, said the ministry's Secretary-General Wesam Tahtamouni.
