Plan to build new prison in Azraq

Ammon News - A parliamentary source revealed on Tuesday a plan to build a new prison in the Azraq area, and to expand the reform and rehabilitation centers of Al-Muwaqqar and Swaqa.

The source said that there are 21,500 inmates in correction and rehabilitation centers, with an occupancy rate of 109% as the prison capacity is 15,000.

There are 6,214 judicial detainees in the reform and rehabilitation centers, 1,772 administrative detainees, and 13,245 reformers, the source added.

The Lower House Public Freedoms and Human Rights Committee, Bassam Fayes said on Tuesday that the file of the general amnesty will be on the cabinet table for study after the request is submitted by the committee.

Fayez added, during statements after the committee's meeting with Interior Minister Mazen Faraya and Minister of Justice Ahmed Zayadat, that the government had received the committee's request for a general amnesty, stressing the government's response to the request.

He indicated that if a decision was not taken by the government; The committee will adopt a proposal for a general amnesty law.

The committee discussed with the two ministers the issue of overcrowding in prisons, which has become burdensome for the security services.
Fayez indicated that the government is working to rationalize and control administrative detention.
