Minister of State for Legal Affairs Wafa' Bani Mustafa said Sunday that recent legislative amendments will boost Jordanian women's economic participation.

Bani Mustafa, who is also Chairman of the Ministerial Committee for Women Empowerment, made the remarks during the second meeting of the Helsinki Policy Forum held by the Women Parliamentarians Network (WPN) and hosted by Forward Thinking in partnership with the Ministry for Foreign Affairs of Finland. The meeting, held to discuss women's role in economic decision-making, was attended by a number of female decision-makers and parliamentarians from Iraq, Libya, Egypt, Finland, Ireland, and the United Kingdom.

Bani Mustafa stressed the importance of the amendments, which have introduced the concept of flexible and part-time work to the Labor Law, criminalized pay gaps and expanded the coverage of the Social Security Law to include maternity leaves.

Defense orders, which were issued during the coronavirus pandemic, have facilitated telecommuting and introduced flexible work and alternatives to institutional nurseries, she pointed out.

The minister stated that the ministerial committee is currently reviewing indicators and reports that tackle gender-based issues, including the Women, Business Activities, and Law report and the Closing the Gender Gap report to determine challenges and propose more legislative amendments that create a female-friendly work environment.
