House foreign committee, Dutch envoy talk ways to strengthen joint cooperation

Ammon News - Chairman of the Lower House Foreign Affairs Committee, MP Khaldoun Haina, valued Dutch stances in support of the Hashemite custodianship over Jerusalem's Islamic and Christian holy sites and its role in providing aid to Jordan to continue its humanitarian role in the region.

Speaking at the committee's meeting on Sunday, with Dutch Ambassador to Jordan, Harry Verweij, Haina highlighted ways to advance the "deep-rooted" bilateral relations in all fields and the latest developments on the regional and international arenas.

Jordan's stances, under His Majesty King Abdullah II's leadership, towards the Palestinian cause and Jerusalem, are "fixed and unaltered," Haina pointed out.

The lawmaker also reiterated the importance of the Hashemite custodianship over Jerusalem's Islamic and Christian holy sites and its role in preserving the holy city's Arab, Islamic and Christian identity and the legal and historical status quo.

In addition, Haina reviewed Jordan's difficult economic conditions and its burdens posed as a result of receiving refugee waves, especially Syrians.

To ensure necessary aid, he called on the international community to assume its responsibilities in this regard and provide the "utmost" support to the countries hosting Syrian refugees.

Meanwhile, the committee's members lauded the "advanced" level of Jordanian-Dutch relations, stressing the importance of strengthening them in all fields, especially in parliamentary areas.

The deputies also called for expanding the joint cooperation horizons to include all economic, commercial, tourism, water, agriculture and human rights fields.

The MPs urged to increase investment and number of water projects in the Kingdom, stressing the importance of exchanging expertise at various levels.

For his part, the Dutch envoy stressed the "deep-rooted" bilateral relations and the keenness to strengthen them in various fields, adding that Jordan, under the King's leadership, is a key player in the region and a model to follow.

The diplomat also stressed the importance of the Hashemite custodianship over Jerusalem's Islamic and Christian holy sites.

Verweij valued Jordan's stances and its humanitarian role in hosting refugees, adding that his country understands the size of Jordan's burdens in this regard.

The envoy said his country continues to support Jordan at various levels, especially in water, agriculture, energy and tourism projects, noting Jordan is rich in tourist and archaeological sites, which requires further promotion.
