Ammon News - The Cassation Court has upheld a July Criminal Court ruling, sentencing a man to eight years in prison after convicting him of attempting to murder his wife in Amman in February 2020.

The Criminal Court declared the defendant guilty of attempted murder, stemming from “a heated dispute” with his wife, on February 12. The defendant was given the maximum sentence.

However, the court decided to reduce the sentence to eight years in prison because the victim dropped the charges against her husband.

Court papers said the defendant and the victim argued over financial matters related to spending on their two children.

On the day of the incident, the court maintained, the defendant returned home and his wife asked him for money to buy their children some goods.

"An argument ensued and the defendant ended up striking his wife with a gas cylinder as she laid sleeping in bed with her two children," court documents said.

The victim was rushed to a nearby hospital and survived the incident after undergoing few surgeries on her skull, the court papers added.

The defendant did not contest his ruling at a higher court.

The Criminal Court’s attorney general, meanwhile, asked the higher court to uphold the eight-year sentence ruling.

The higher court ruled that the Criminal Court proceedings were accurate and that the defendant was given the appropriate punishment.

The Cassation Court bench comprised judges Mohammad Ibrahim, Yassin Abdullat, Nayef Samarat, Hammad Ghzawi and Mohammad Khashashneh.
