Ammon News -

The National Centre for Human Rights (NCHR) said Monday that His Majesty King Abdullah's directive to proceed with steps to grant a special pardon for those convicted with lèse-majesté crimes is "another building block on the road of promoting freedoms in the Kingdom."

On Saturday, the King directed the government to look into all cases related to lèse-majesté, which violate article 195 of the Penal Code and in which final rulings have been issued, to grant a special pardon to those convicted in such cases.

In a statement, the NCHR said that the royal directive is an opportunity to revisit the legislation matrix governing public freedoms in the Kingdom, which His Majesty has for long underlined as central to the reform process.

The legislation on freedoms should be in line with the Jordanian constitution, which stipulates in Article 128 that the legislation should not prejudice the essence and fundamentals of rights, and be consistent with international human rights standards, it said.
