UNHCR reduces programs in Jordan by $28 million

12-05-2024 10:36 AM

Ammon News - The United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) announced a $28 million reduction in its programs in Jordan in 2024, as it faces a decline in funding for its operations.

A recent report showed that the UNHCR intends to significantly reduce shelter maintenance an repair programs in the camps, adding that this will affect the lives of refugees, according to Al-Mamlaka.

It also intends to reduce protection services, including the protection of survivors of gender-based violence, as well as the transfer of sick refugees from camps to hospitals outside them.

The UNHCR allocated $374.786849 million to Jordan in 2024, compared to $390.110643 million in 2023.

In a recent report, the UNHCR said that funding expectations for 2024 indicate that it is facing further shortfalls, and as of the end of April, the commission had received $256.4 million in funding for its operations in the Middle East and North Africa region, out of the $2.341 billion required, i.e. 11%.

Since April, the number of refugee families receiving cash assistance for basic needs from UNHCR in urban areas, where 82% of refugees reside, has decreased from 30,000 families to 23,500 families.

Refugee families outside the camps receive 25% less cash assistance per month than they received previously, according to UNHCR, which pledged to continue supporting the most vulnerable groups, starting in May.

The cuts exacerbate the poor situation of refugees, the UNHCR stressed.

Its noteworthy that Jordan hosts 52,470 Iraqi refugees registered with UNHCR, and more than 1.3 million Syrians since the beginning of the Syrian crisis in 2011, including 634,728 Syrian refugees registered with UNHCR.

The UNHCR also says that 706,100 refugees are registered with it of all nationalities except Palestinian refugees who are affiliated with UNRWA, as May 4.
