Toukan delivers lecture on nuclear safety at National Defence College

Ammon News - Chairman of the Jordan Atomic Energy Commission Khaled Toukan on Tuesday affirmed Jordan's firm stance towards the presence of any undeclared or unguarded nuclear facility in the Middle East that poses a threat to peace in the region.

His remarks came during his lecture titled "Arms Control and Preventing the Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons" at the Royal Jordanian National Defence College for the 18th National Defence Course.

Toukan said the commission is primarily focused on implementing the comprehensive vision of the Jordanian nuclear programme for peaceful purposes, exploiting and investing the natural nuclear resources in Jordan, especially uranium, building capabilities and developing cadres, the Jordan News Agency, Petra, reported.

The commission’s scope of work includes fortifying nuclear science and its applications, establishing a nuclear power plant for the production of electricity and water desalination and strengthening cooperation with the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) and experienced countries.

He also reviewed the establishment of the Jordan Research and Training Reactor, and the latest developments on the construction of Synchrotron-light for Experimental Science and Applications in the Middle East (SESAME) and an extraction plant within the framework of the Central Jordan Uranium Project.
