Ammon News - AMMONNEWS - Jordan, concerned over Islamic State of Iraq and Levant, has reinforced its northern border with Syria.
Jordan was said to have been alarmed by reports that ISIL was operating in southern Syria near the border with the Hashemite kingdom. Jordan operates 45 crossing points along the border with Syria.
Officials said the Hashemite kingdom has deployed troops and combat vehicles along the 378-kilometer Jordanian border with Syria. They said the military and Gendarmerie faced increasing infiltration from Islamists, including fighters from ISIL.
“Most of the infiltration stems from those who want to escape Syria,” an official said. “But there are others who have hostile intent.”
On Dec. 13, the Border Guard Force captured three Arabs who crossed from Syria into Jordan. One of the infiltrators was injured and the others were arrested.
This marked the second reported infiltration attempt from Syria in December. In the first incident, the Border Guard Force opened fire and killed one infiltrator and injured another.
“Those suspected of being linked to terrorist organizations are subject to strict security checks,” Border Guard Force spokesman Col. Mamdouh Al Ameri said.
“Security forces are following strict procedures at airports and other crossing points,” Al Ameri said.
