Ammon News - (Petra) – Some 12 beggars, including some belonging to Arab nationalities, were arrested as an anti-vagrancy crackdown began in the city of Zarqa, according to the Social Development Department.

The department's director, Jeryes Ammari, said the arrests were carried out by the department's crews, accompanied by personnel of the Zarqa police, but added that "this phenomenon" could not be contained unless all social groups came together in a collective effort to prevent it from spreading.

"The beggars should not be given any money, but people should instead donate towards any kind of charitable work," he added.

Ammari noted the close cooperation regarding the exercise with the Zarqa Police Directorate, adding that citizens' awareness would make this effort a success. He said the department's offices were open to receive and address any complaints regarding vagrant behaviour in their respective areas.
