AMMAN — A 28-year-old convicted inmate died on Friday at Karak Public Hospital after suffering from health problems, official sources said on Saturday.

The prisoner, who was rushed to hospital at dawn on Friday suffering from chest pains, died shortly after being admitted to the emergency unit, according to a senior official source.

A post-mortem conducted by a team of pathologists headed by Ewad Tarawneh concluded that the man died of respiratory failure caused by a blood infection (sepsis), the source told The Jordan Times.

The inmate was serving an eight-year sentence at the Karak Correctional and Rehabilitation Centre on charges of attempted murder and “had almost completed his term when the medical issue was reported”, according to a second source.

Meanwhile, a married woman who reportedly set herself ablaze at her home in Karak on Thursday was still in critical condition at Al Bashir Hospital in Amman on Saturday, a medical source said.

The 32-year-old, who was not identified by officials, reportedly poured kerosene on her body and set herself on fire following a domestic dispute with her husband; she was rushed by her neighbours to Karak Public Hospital, the source said.

“The woman suffered burns on 50 per cent of her upper body and had to be transferred to Al Bashir Hospital for further medical attention,” the source said.

Police said they were investigating both incidents.
