2 killed, 1 injured in shootout with police

Ammon News - AMMONNEWS - Two people were killed and one was injured on Tuesday in armed clashes with police in the southern governorate of Aqaba, a security source said.

The three individuals are considered outlaws and wanted on various crimes, the security source said.

One of the individuals killed is wanted for 17 suspected crimes, including theft, murder, forming violent gangs, possession of illegal drugs, arms possession, and armed robbery.

The second victim was also wanted on suspected crimes including theft, possession of weapons, assault, and vandalism.

One individual was critically injured in the shootout with police and was rushed to the hospital.

He remains in critical condition in the Intensive Care Unit, the police source added.

Dozens of family members of the victims crowded on Tuesday afternoon in Ma'an governorate, some 200 kilometers south of Amman, protesting the killing of the two individuals, citing the incident as a "provocation."

The Public Security Department (PSD) said on Tuesday that the Aqaba Police Department received complaints from Rashidiyyah district in Aqaba of three armed individuals who enter into construction sites and shoot at guards before stealing construction materials and equipment.

PSD added that police and gendarmerie units traced and monitored the individuals, who refused to obey orders of police and proceeded to fire gunshots at the security units.

The individuals reportedly were in possession of semi-automatic weapons and a large quantity of ammunition that they used to fire at police, PSD said.

The individuals reportedly sustained gunshot wounds from the shootout with police and were rushed to the hospital. Two of them were pronounced dead upon arrival.

Police added that the vehicle used as a getaway car by the individuals was found to be stolen from Ma'an governorate.
