PM: Gov't won't prosecute any journalist on opinion cases

Ammon News - AMMAN (Petra) Prime Minister Dr. Abdullah Ensour on Wednesday met with publishers and representatives of a group of news websites and assured them that the government is committed to freedom of expression and opinion and will not prosecute any journalist on an issue of opinion.

Esnour urged the press and news websites to abide by the ethics of the profession and shun slander, character assassination and targeting of people’s reputation and dignity.

Speaking on the press and publications law, he said the legislation will be dealt with positively and within the spirit of the law.

Ensour said:" it is our duty, as a government, to enforce the law without exception, but we also have the right to apply it flexibly and with a margin of openness and goodwill." In response to a question, the Prime Minister said some people have been arrested on corruption charges "and the process is ongoing under the law and will not stop." The Prime Minister stressed that the next elections will be absolutely fair and free, affirming that the directives of His Majesty the King are clear and no one will dare to rig a single vote.
