Ammon News - AMMONNEWS - State Security Court has extended the jail term of business tycoon Khalid Shahin by two months, not counting the two-month treatment period he spent outside the Kingdom last year, an informed source said Tuesday.

Shahin was supposed to complete his jail term on Wednesday.

Shahin, who was serving a three-year term in prison for bribery and corruption in a case related to the Jordan Petroleum Refinery Company (JPRC) expansion project, was allowed to leave the country in February 2011 on the basis of a joint medical report signed by doctors from the private and public sectors stating that his obesity-related health condition could not be treated in Jordan.

The case sparked public fury when a news report claimed that Shahin was seen in London “in good shape”. He then went to Germany, from where he was brought home after extensive diplomatic and legal efforts. Two ministers resigned over the scandal.

Former finance minister Adel Qudah, who was also chairman of JPRC, former director of the refinery Ahmad Rifai and former economic adviser at the Prime Ministry Mohammad Rawashdeh were also serving a three-year prison term for bribery in connection with the project, which was halted.

The three are expected to be freed Wednesday, the judicial source said.
