Around half a million students enrolled in Jordan’s higher education institutions

Ammon News - The spokesperson for Higher Education Ministry spokesman Muhannad Al-Khatib, revealed comprehensive statistics on the higher education sector in the Kingdom for the 2025–2026 academic year, highlighting disparities in enrollment figures and institutional capacity between public and private educational institutions.

Al-Khatib said on Thursday that public universities and colleges, comprising 10 public universities and 10 university colleges, attract the largest share of students, with 287,320 students, representing 60% of all students in Jordan.

In contrast, the private sector includes 18 universities and 42 community colleges, hosting 192,689 students, accounting for 40% of the total student population of 480,009.

Regarding academic programs, Al-Khatib noted that public universities and colleges offer 1,322 majors, compared to 899 majors in private institutions.

The education sector also introduced 94 new majors in public institutions and 88 in private institutions to meet the evolving needs of the labor market.

As for teaching staff, official figures showed that public universities employ 60% of all faculty members in the Kingdom, with 8,508 faculty members, while private universities account for 40%, employing 5,644 faculty members out of a nationwide total of 14,152.

Concerning international (non-Jordanian) students, the data revealed that private institutions lead in attracting foreign students, with 36,239 students, 65% of all international students, enrolled in private universities and colleges, compared with 19,171 students, or 35%, in public institutions.

Overall, Jordan hosts 55,410 international students from 119 countries worldwide, representing 11.5% of the Kingdom’s total student population.
