Director of Military Media Brigadier General Mustafa Al-Hyari said on Saturday that the the Jordan Armed Forces – Arab Army (JAF) continues to carry out defensive missions under the name “Operation Jordan Shield,” aimed at protecting the homeland and preventing any loss of life.
Speaking during a press briefing at the National Center for Security and Crisis Management on Saturday, Al-Hyari stated that Iran and some factions in the region are directly targeting Jordanian territory without any justification.
Iranian attacks constitute a violation of the Kingdom's sovereignty and are condemned and rejected, Al-Hyari added.
He revealed that since the start of the war, Iran has targeted Jordan with 281 missiles and drones. Jordan has successfully intercepted 261 of them, while 20 were not intercepted.
Al-Hayari indicated that the missiles and drones were targeting "vital sites and facilities" within Jordanian territory, emphasizing that they were not cruise missiles as some have claimed, and that their interception resulted in debris falling in various parts of the Kingdom.
He noted that the war erupted following airstrikes launched by the United States and Israel against Iran, which were followed by Iranian attacks targeting countries in the region, including Jordan, despite the Kingdom's assurances that it would not become a battleground and that its territory would not be used as a launching pad for any attack.
He explained that the armed forces raised their level of readiness before the outbreak of war, placing all formations and units on immediate alert. Units along the border were reinforced, and the border guards were provided with the necessary equipment to deal with the exceptional circumstances.
Air defense systems were also activated within their available ranges, and airspace surveillance was intensified using aircraft and radar.
He added that Jordan activated military and defense cooperation agreements with a number of allied and friendly armies to provide air cover that would enhance the protection of the Kingdom's airspace, in parallel with coordination with the Civil Aviation Authority to regulate air traffic and ensure airspace safety.
Al-Hayari stressed that Jordan has sought since the beginning of the escalation to spare the region from war through diplomatic means, stressing that the Kingdom is primarily concerned with preserving its security and the safety of its citizens, and that what it has been exposed to in terms of missile and drone attacks is an attack on its sovereignty and has caused material damage.
