Ammon News - JOHANNESBURG, South Africa- Results from Friday's games at the World Cup in South Africa:
Serbia 1, Germany 0
Milan Jovanovic scored moments after Serbia was given a man advantage Friday, sending the Serbs to a 1-0 upset of Germany in Group D play at the World Cup in Port Elizabeth.
Jovanovic drove in a ball from close range in the 38th minute, officially 1 minute after German goal-scoring specialist Miroslav Klose was sent off by Spanish referee Alberto Undiano after picking up a second yellow card.
There was a flurry of yellow cards in the early going. Klose's second was the sixth of the first half and Undiano ended up flagging seven players (Klose twice) four cards to each side over the course of the game.
Serbia immediately attacked after the Klose disqualification. Milos Krasic passed to Nikola Zigic who headed the ball in front of the goal. Jovanovic was on the spot and powered a shot past German goalkeeper Manuel Neuer.
Germany, even a man down, played aggressively and had several chances, mostly by Lukas Podolski. That includes a 60th-minute penalty kick that Podolski tried to send in low right only to have Serbian goaltender Vladimir Stojkovic make the save.
The result pulled Serbia into a tie with Germany and Ghana, which has its second game of group play Saturday against Australia in Rustenburg, with three points on top of Group D.
The group's final set of games is Wednesday with Germany playing Ghana and Serbia going against Australia.
____________
Slovenia 2, United States 2 (tie)
Landon Donovan and Michael Bradley scored second-half goals, lifting the United States to a 2-2 Group C tie with Slovenia in World Cup play in Johannesburg.
Valter Birsa and Zlatan Ljubijankic put Slovenia up 2-0 before halftime but Donovon got the Americans on the board shortly after intermission and the United States kept the pressure on through the period.
Still, the Slovenians held the lead despite a consistent forcing effort by the United States. The style paid off in the 82nd minute when Jozy Altidore leaped and was able to head the ball toward Bradley. The ball bounced twice before Bradley flicked it over Slovenian goalkeeper Samir Handanovic for the goal.
The United States even had an apparent game-winner waved off late when Maurice Edu knocked in a pass from a Donovan free kick but was apparently ruled offside.
Birsa's goal was off a 35-yard strike that froze U.S. goaltender Tim Howard and put Slovenia up in the 13th minute.
Ljubijankic made it 2-0 in the 42nd minute after working a give-and-go with Milivoje Novakovic.
____________
Algeria 0, England 0 (tie)
Algerian goalkeeper Rais Mbolhi shut out England Friday, giving Algeria its first point in World Cup Group C play with a 0-0 draw in Cape Town.
It was the second draw for England, which tied the United States in its tournament opener 1-1 on a mistake by goaltender Robert Green. England turned to David James in goal for the second game and, while he came away with a clean sheet, it was the English offense that came up empty this time.
It was the second surprising draw in Group C Friday. Earlier, the United States came from a two-goal deficit to earn a 2-2 tie with Slovenia. The results leave Slovenia leading the group with four points while England and the United States have two points and Algeria one.
That leaves Group C's final pair of games Slovenia plays England and the United States takes on Algeria to decide which two teams make the second stage.
Algeria had just one shot on target while England peppered the Algerian defense with 15 shots, including six on target.
Mbolhi was making his first international start and played solidly. One of England's best chances to score was in the first half when John Terry fired off a bouncing shot that a diving Mbolhi saved.
