A Jordanian MP objects to the clauses of the IPU statement, and the Israeli delegation exits in protest

07-04-2025 01:17 PM

Ammon News - Jordanian MP Mohammad Al-Khalayleh, the representative of the Arab Parliament, delivered a powerful intervention during the meetings of the Standing Committee on Peace and International Security of the Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU). He objected to several points in the conference’s final statement, describing them as weak and not reflective of the gravity of the crimes committed by the Israeli occupation against the Palestinian people.

Al-Khalayleh criticised the statement’s language, which he said equated the victim with the oppressor, pointing to terms such as “conflict” and references to “the burden on women and children.” He stressed that what is happening is a systematic act of genocide targeting Palestinian civilians, especially women and children.

He also called for the inclusion of explicit clauses in the final statement to criminalise attempts to forcibly displace Palestinians from their land, and to clearly condemn the massacres and violations committed by the occupation in the West Bank and Gaza Strip. He emphasised the urgent need to support the Arab plan for the reconstruction of Gaza, where more than two million Palestinians are living in catastrophic conditions.

The Israeli delegation walked out of the hall in protest during Al-Khalayleh’s speech, which received broad support from several participating delegations and led to the issues he raised becoming central discussion points at the conference.

Al-Khalayleh concluded his speech with strong words, stating, “The time has come for a just and final solution to the Palestinian cause, for a people whose land was taken and handed to settlers who came from all corners of the earth.” He added that achieving global peace must begin with ending the occupation and delivering justice to the Palestinian people.
