Ammon News - The total licensed building area in Jordan reached approximately 5.48 million square meters in the first 8 months of 2024, marking an 11.1% decline compared to 6.16 million square meters during the same period in 2023, according to the Department of Statistics (DoS).
In its latest report, the DoS noted that 14,948 building permits were issued in January-August 2024, down by 7.3% compared to 16,121 permits issued during the same period in 2023. This decline was reflected in the overall slowdown in construction activity across the Kingdom.
For residential purposes, the licensed areas totaled 4.4 million square meters, a significant 14.9% drop from 5.17 million square meters in 2023. In contrast, the licensed areas for non-residential purposes saw an 8% increase, reaching 1.08 million square meters compared to 1 million square meters last year.
The report highlighted that residential buildings represented 80.3% of the total licensed areas, with non-residential structures accounting for 19.7%.
Regionally, the central region dominated with 68.3% of the licensed building area, though this marked a slight decrease of 2.7%. The northern region held 22.3% of the total, experiencing a larger 10.1% drop. Meanwhile, the southern region saw a rise of 8%, constituting 9.4% of the total licensed building areas.
