01-05-2010 09:53 PM

Ammon News - AMMONNEWS - Rakan Qadah - Security and Gendarmerie forces on Thursday afternoon deployed throughout Salt governorate to contain riots that erupted after a student at Balqaa Applied University (BAU) died Thursday morning after another student stabbed him during a fight.

the victim was stabbed in the neck and was transported to the state-run Salt Hospital, but had passed away from the sustained injuries upon arrival.

Security forces closed several main roads in the city to prevent any escalation of the riots between the tribes of the both parties in the incident, a security source told 'Ammon News.'

Rioters had set stores on fire and damaged dozens of businesses and public and private property earlier on Thursday, and several fights erupted as witnesses said that rocks and gunfire were exchanged between rioters.

Gendarmerie forces used tear-gas to disperse rioters.

Tribal leaders from Salt met Thursday afternoon with Interior Minister Nayef Qadi to work on calming people down and containing the situation.

The security source said that the perpetrator was arrested and an investigation has been launched to look into the details of the incident.

EARLIER STORY

A student at Balqaa Applied University (BAU) in Salt was stabbed by a colleague after a fight between them erupted Thursday morning.

The student that was stabbed had died as a result of injuries he sustained, University sources confirmed.

The student who stabbed the victim did so in revenge after the deceased and relatives physically assaulted him in a group fight.

Relatives of the deceased student went on a rampage breaking windows, damaging university property and windows of cars that were parked inside the university campus. University administration and security were working to contain the riots fearing further escalation after news circulated that the stabbed person had died, BAU employees told 'Ammon News.'

Dr. Omar Remawi, President of BAU, decided to cancel all classes for the rest of the day. He told 'Ammon News' that closing down the university's Salt campus was a preventative measure to contain the situation, noting that university security cadres were able to control the riots that erupted after the fight between the two students, one of which was killed.

Hundreds of relatives of the deceased students demonstrated in Yarmouk Street in Salt, as police are trying to contain any escalation of possible tribal fights, asking students from Salt to leave the campuses at BAU, University of Jordan, and Amman Ahliyyah University.

Meanwhile, classes were suspended at University of Jordan as students and visitors were not allowed to enter the campus.
