Ammon News - The United Nations Refugee Agency (UNHCR) in Jordan announced that it provided nearly $70 million to more than 300,000 refugees in 2023.

In 2023, UNHCR, along with the World Food Programme, also reviewed and updated its targeting criteria for assistance to enhance the efficiency of its programme. As a result, with the revised criteria focusing on larger families, more refugees received assistance.

The UNHCR also provided cash assistance to over 317,000 vulnerable refugee women, men and children, channelling some $70 million across the country, to help refugees better address their basic needs and other urgent needs (e.g. health, education, protection).

The agency obtained 43% of its financial requirements for the fiscal year 2023, as of December 15, 2023.

Jordan hosts 55,426 thousand Iraqi refugees registered with the UNHCR, and more than 1.3 million Syrians since the beginning of the Syrian crisis in 2011, including 649,091 Syrian refugees registered with the UNHCR.

The UNHCR says that 723,886 refugees are registered with it of all nationalities except the Palestinian refugees who belong to UNRWA, and that is until the end of last year.
