Ammon News - Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs and Expatriates, Ayman Safadi, and EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, Josep Borrell , on Tuesday held extensive talks, which affirmed continued Jordan-EU cooperation and coordination and focused on the Palestinian issue and the Kingdom's initiative, aimed to reach a political solution to the Syrian crisis.

During his meeting with Borrell, Safadi, on the second and final leg of a European tour that began in Germany Monday, stressed importance of Jordanian-EU partnership and European role in efforts to resolve regional crises and achieve security, stability and prosperity.

Focusing on the Palestinian issue, Safadi warned of danger of the continued deterioration in the occupied Palestinian territories, and noted the need to stop illegal Israeli measures that fuel violence and undermine the two-state solution.

In this regard, Safadi called on finding a "true" political horizon to re-launch serious and effective negotiations to achieve a just and comprehensive peace based on the two-state solution.

Safadi and Borrell discussed outcomes of the Aqaba and Sharm el-Sheikh meetings, and efforts made by the Kingdom to stop deterioration and escalation by stopping their causes and activating the peace process, in which Jordan sees an "important and major" role for Europe in this effort.

Safadi and Borrell also discussed preparations for holding a meeting of the Munich Group in Berlin next month.

Safadi stressed importance of EU's position to support the two-state solution, reject settlement and land confiscation, demolish Palestinian homes and displace Palestinians, and commit to the need to respecting Jerusalem's historical and legal status quo and its Islamic and Christian sanctities.

Safadi and Borrell also emphasized rejection of extremist racist discourse and the need to confront it.

The two sides agreed to maintain joint coordination and action to achieve a just and comprehensive peace based on the two-state solution, according to a Foreign Ministry statement.

In addition, Safadi and Borrell discussed Jordan's initiative to solve the Syrian crisis through direct Arab-Syrian engagement according to the step-by-step approach.

This effort would guarantee ending the crisis and addressing its humanitarian, security and political consequences, preserve Syria's unity, cohesion and sovereignty, and fulfill its people's aspirations, Safadi added.

Safadi also stressed impossibility of continuing the current situation in Syria and dealing with the crisis through approaches that fail to solve it.

Safadi and Borrell discussed the refugee issue and highlighted the need to provide continued international support for refugees and host countries.

The two sides also reviewed the ongoing preparations for holding the 7th Brussels Conference on Supporting the Future of Syria and the Region, which is organized by the EU in June 2023 in Brussels.

Safadi thanked Borrell for the EU's continuous support provided to the Syrian refugees in Jordan, and to the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees (UNRWA).
