WHO: No need to provide cholera vaccines to Jordan at present

Ammon News - The Director of Regional Health Emergencies at the WHO Dr. Richard Brennan, said that Jordan has assessed the risks related to the cholera outbreak in both Syria and Lebanon, and has taken preventive measures based on benefiting from the experience of the Corona pandemic.

In response to Ammon's inquiries during the press conference to follow up on the developments of the cholera outbreak in both Syria and Lebanon, Brennan added that Jordan faces the risks of cholera transmission and that neighboring countries must increase their ability to monitor cholera cases to enhance dealing with the disease and determine medical capabilities while improving the level of hygiene in general, stressing that the preparedness in Jordan about cholera is taken seriously.

As for vaccines directed at Jordan, Brennan replied “at the present time we do not see the need to provide vaccines to Jordan, but rather target the supply of areas experiencing active cholera outbreaks, rather than directing vaccines to neighboring countries that are taking preventive measures.”

In the event of an increased risk of transmission of the cholera to Jordan, the provision of vaccines will be considered if Jordan requests to supply the vaccine for the disease, Brennan explained.
