A new amendment of Jordanian legislation gave the opportunity to 2542 persons who were deprived of their liberty in prison to reform themselves with an alternative punishment during the last four months.
The reform allowed the use of alternatives to penalties that deprive liberty in case of crimes committed for the first time and did not have personal liability to their victims.
The Secretary-General of the Judicial Council and its spokesperson, Judge Ali Al-Musimi, said that the action plan developed by the Council to activate the application of alternatives to penalties depriving of liberty, and after the meetings held by the Council’s president with the judges of the criminal courts in the Kingdom, the results have resulted in the effective implementation of these alternatives.
He added that the courts issued 2,956 rulings this year to apply alternatives to penalties depriving of liberty until the date of last October 31.
He indicated that 2542 of these sentences were issued after the date of last June 24, which is the day when the amendments to the Penal Code became effective, which dealt with alternatives to punishments depriving of liberty by amendment.
He pointed out that the council has set an indicator to measure the progress achieved in its plan to increase the number of judicial rulings by resorting to alternatives to penalties depriving of liberty by 100% of the number of rulings issued from the beginning of this year until the amendment of the law, which amounted to 414 rulings.
He said the courts had achieved an increase of 500% over the target, five times the target.
