Royal Initiatives: Issawi inspects Russeifa phosphate hills rehab project

Ammon News - Royal Court Chief Yousef Issawi, head of the follow-up committee for the implementation of His Majesty King Abdullah’s Initiatives, Saturday checked on the progress of work in a project to rehabilitate the phosphate hills in Ruseifa in Zarqa Governorate.

Issawi was accompanied by Deputy Prime Minister, Minister of Local Administration Tawfiq Krishan, Minister of Public Works, Housing and Transport Maher Abu Al-Samen, and Mohammad Thneibat, Chairman of the Board of Directors of the Jordan Phosphate Mines Company, which is carrying out the project, as well as local officials.

In a previous visit to Russeifa, King Abdullah pointed to the problem of pollution from the phosphate mine and ordered that the environmental hazards be addressed speedily as well as the need to improve services and infrastructure for the local population.

The Royal Court has coordinated efforts among the relevant parties to find drastic solutions and make tangible progress in rehabilitating the area environmentally and achieve development there.

The Royal Court Chief toured the site, where phosphate mining work stopped 1985, and saw first-hand the infilling of the mining pits and the site designated by the Greater Amman Municipality, which was planted with trees, as well as the environmental park project, which aims to find a safe recreational space for the local residents.

After the tour, a meeting was held to discuss obstacles facing the project, including wastewater, attacks on state land, the environmental park project and relocating the livestock market.

Issawi told the local officials, including the mayors of Zarqa and Russeifa, that His Majesty is closely following up on procedures and the details related to the workflow at the vital environmental project.

For his part, Krishan said many obstacles were addressed, including the environmental park, which is expected to be completed by the end of the year and provided with various facilities, noting forestation work in surrounding areas.
