Ammon News - The National Society for Consumer Protection called on the government, represented by the Ministries of Planning and International Cooperation and the Ministry of Agriculture, to adopt water harvesting projects to take advantage of rainwater, most of which goes to waste and is not used properly, even though Jordan suffers from water scarcity and considered one of the world’s water-poorest countries.
Dr. Muhammad Obeidat, head of the Consumer Protection Association, said in a press statement on Monday, that the government must take the initiative to overcome all obstacles and problems, by contributing to the drilling of wells in the Badia, the countryside, camps and the outskirts of cities, especially those areas where there are insufficient quantities of water for drinking and Irrigation of crops.
Obeidat added that the funds needed to finance this project can be provided through grants and loans obtained by the government from donors, after which they are given to citizens in the form of soft-paying loans or in the form of grants to destitute poor families who cannot obtain the necessary funds to dig wells.
Obeidat suggested that 100,000 wells be drilled annually in the Jordanian Badia, the countryside, the outskirts of cities and camps, with a capacity ranging from 30 m3 to 50 m3 per well, and an estimated cost of between 1200 and 1500 dinars per well. This amount can be provided through external grants or soft loans obtained by the government.
And he indicated that the implementation of water harvesting projects and digging wells will enable us to save tens of millions that we need to supply homes and farms with water, in addition to that it will reduce the value of the amounts allocated to water bills, and it will also help in the process of irrigating home farming, and thus provide additional incomes for some families who grow varieties Fast-growing and selling, thus obtaining additional income under difficult economic conditions.
Obeidat also called on able citizens to take the initiative to dig wells around their homes and on their farms, as digging these wells around homes and farms will help them in providing a water stock that will suffice them for a long period of time during the year, thus not needing to buy or consume water provided by the relevant official authorities, which It will help conserve extra amounts of water.
