Ammon News - Foreign Minister Ayman Safadi confirmed Jordan's support to efforts of the UN Special Envoy for Syria Geir Pedersen to reach a political solution to the Syrian crisis in accordance with Security Council Resolution No. 2254 and the "step by step, step for step" process.

In a meeting held Wednesday, Safadi and Pedersen discussed efforts aimed at reaching a political solution to the Syrian crisis.

The UN envoy briefed Safadi on developments related to efforts to resolve the crisis within the UN-led path, and outcomes of his talks held in Syria, from which he arrived in Amman today.

Safadi called for intensifying work in order to achieve practical and tangible progress in efforts to end the catastrophic situation in Syria, and to reach a political solution that meets the aspirations of the Syrian people, guarantees Syria's unity, cohesion and sovereignty, rescues it from terrorism, and creates the necessary conditions for the voluntary return of refugees.

Safadi said that it is not possible to coexist with the current situation in Syria and the suffering that this situation causes for the Syrians, and negative impacts on the region, especially Syria's neighboring countries.

Safadi briefed Pedersen on the details of the Jordanian proposal, which includes a collective Arab role in efforts to resolve the Syrian crisis and address all its consequences, in a manner that guarantees the security and stability of Syria and the security of the region and confronts all the humanitarian, political, security and economic challenges caused by the crisis.

Safadi discussed burdens the Kingdom has to endure due to hosting Syrian refugees.

He called for continued international support for refugees and host countries to ensure a decent life for them and to meet their needs.

He underlined that the refugee crisis is an international responsibility and not the responsibility of the host countries alone.

Safadi and Pedersen also discussed the situation in southern Syria and the challenge of drug smuggling, as the foreign minister said that Jordan will continue to take all actions to address this danger, and will do everything necessary to ensure the security of its borders and interests.

Safadi lauded Pedersen's efforts, and agreed to continue consultation and joint coordination.
