Ammon News - Cypriot Ambassador Michalis Ioannou in Amman has said that his country maintains a regular political dialogue with Jordan in recognition of its significant role in maintaining stability in the region.
During a ceremony commemorating Cyprus's Independence Day on Tuesday, loannou stated that the 60-year-old ties with Jordan have grown steadily since their establishment on February 26, 1962.
He added that the opening of a Cypriot embassy in Amman in 2009 and a Jordanian embassy in Nicosia in 2016 was critical in the development of relations between the two countries.
In recent years, Cyprus and Jordan have exchanged frequent visits at various levels, the most recent being His Majesty King Abdullah's visit to Cyprus in December of last year, according to the envoy.
Ioannou also mentioned a trilateral mechanism established a few years ago between Cyprus, Jordan, and Greece, which he asserted has added a new dimension to Cyprus's cooperation with Jordan.
He went on to say that through this mechanism, the three countries share their perspectives on matters of mutual interest and attempt to address common challenges through synergies for the benefit of all three nations and regional stability.
"In the framework of this trilateral mechanism, the President of Cyprus hosted the first trilateral Summit in 2018, with the participation of His Majesty and the Prime Minister of Greece. President Anastasiades looks forward to welcoming them again to Nicosia later this year for the 4th trilateral Summit," added the ambassador.
Pointing to society and cultural proximity between Jordanian and Cypriot people, he said many Jordanians visit Cyprus frequently for holidays, investments, or university studies.
"Our world is facing many challenges which can only be addressed through dialogue and the fundamental respect of international law by all countries," he went on, emphasizing that Cyprus' foreign policy is always guided by this principle and always acts with full respect of international law and the UN Charter.
