Ammon News - Minister of Planning and International Cooperation Nasser Shraideh on Tuesday inaugurated a project to expand grain silos in Juweideh south of Amman, which is funded by the Abu Dhabi Fund for Development as part of the United Arab Emirates share of the Gulf grant to Jordan.

The minister said during the opening ceremony, which was attended by Director General of the Abu Dhabi Fund for Development, Mohammed Saif Al Suwaidi, that the project is part of His Majesty King Abdullah's directives to build national capacities by boosting the food security system and maintaining a strategic stock of staple commodities, especially wheat.

The expansion scheme, he said, is a key strategic project in the Kingdom that aims to enhance the storage capacity of the Jordan Silos and Supply General Company.

Shraideh noted the level of bilateral Jordan-UAE relations and the efforts of His Majesty King Abdullah and UAE President Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan to bolster the brotherly relations and cooperation between the two countries.

He said that the project is part of ongoing UAE support through the grant to Jordan by Gulf Arab countries, and the pledges of the Makkah Al-Mukarramah Summit, where the Jordanian government carried out priority strategic projects in a wide range of sectors.

The minister pointed out that the implementation of such projects comes at a time when the world witnesses immense challenges, including the impact on supply chains and rising prices of basic commodities as a repercussion of the coronavirus pandemic and the Ukraine-Russia crisis.

The project includes the construction of 24 silos with a total capacity of 120,000 tons of grain, through a grant of $33 million. Another 28 silos were established in the Aqaba Governorate with a total capacity of 100,000 tons of grain, which was financed through a $37.5 million grant.

For his part, the Director General of the Abu Dhabi Fund for Development noted the distinguished historical UAE-Jordan relations, stressing that the UAE leadership is keen to provide various forms of support to Jordan to contribute to the Kingdom's comprehensive development process and stimulate economic activity and sustainable development through financing priority projects.

Director General of the Jordan Silos and Supply General Company Imad Tarawneh said the project to increase the storage capacity in silos has helped to reduce the damage from supply chain disruptions.
