Ammon News - Sri Lanka's Prime Minister Mahinda Rajapaksa Monday resigned his post after nationwide protests engulfed the country and culminated in the killing of an MP and the wounding of scores.
According to France 24, the Sri Lankan police said that the MP, who had been a member of the ruling party, was killed after he opened fire on protesters blocking his car. Two others were wounded, officials said.
Later in the day, properties of ruling party MPs and government officials were attacked, reports added.
Rajapaksa, 76, sent his resignation letter to his younger brother President Gotabaya Rajapaksa, saying he hoped it would help resolve the crisis, paving the way for the establishment of a government of national unity.
