Ammon News - The Court of Cassation upheld a September State Security Court (SSC) ruling, sentencing a drug dealer to two years in prison after convicting him of selling illegal narcotics to an undercover agent in Amman in October 2020.

The court declared the defendant guilty of possessing and selling Captagon pills and illegal narcotics to an Anti-Narcotics Department (AND) agent on October 25 and handed him a three-year prison term.

The court also ordered the defendant to pay JD2,000 in fines.

However, the court decided to reduce the sentence to two years while maintaining the fine amount “to give the defendant a second chance in life”.

Court documents said AND investigators learned that the defendant was in possession of illegal narcotics and sent one of its agents to pose as a buyer.

“The AND agent purchased 12 Captagon pills in return for JD40 from the defendant,” court documents said.

The defendant was arrested shortly afterward, the court documents added.

The defendant contested the SSC’s ruling through his lawyer, who argued that the court “did not provide solid evidence to implicate his client”.

Meanwhile, the Criminal Court’s general attorney asked the higher court to uphold the verdict against the defendant.

The Court of Cassation ruled that the verdict was correct and the defendant deserved the ruling he had received.

The Cassation Court comprised judges Mohammad Ibrahim, Yassin Abdullat, Nayef Samarat, Qassem Dughmi and Hammad Ghzawi.
