The Cabinet Wednesday discussed the Israeli escalatory measures in the Al Aqsa Mosque and Jordan's efforts to de-escalate the situation and protect Palestinian worshipers and the Al Aqsa Mosque.
In a Cabinet meeting, Prime Minister, Bisher Khasawneh, affirmed the government's work to implement the directives of His Majesty King Abdullah II to keep impetus on the regional and international efforts that Jordan has initiated to encounter illegal Israeli measures aimed at changing the historical and legal status quo in the Al Aqsa Mosque.
Khasawneh referred to the virtual meeting chaired by His Majesty King Abdullah II today, during which he directed the government to continue its regional and international channels of communication to stop the "escalatory and provocative" Israeli actions and to formulate a pressing and influential international position to that end.
Khasawneh added that the Israeli escalation and measures that took place by extremist groups threaten security, peace and regional stability if they were not addressed, stressing that tackling these measures is a responsibility that Jordan devotes all its efforts.
He highlighted the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Expatriates' role in de-escalating the tension, as it was in direct contact with the Palestinian leadership and with various international bodies. It also communicated with Israel, the US and European countries.
"Israel, as the occupying power, bears responsibility for what is happening in Jerusalem, and it must respect the existing historical and legal situation. It must not violate international humanitarian law and international law that regulates the duties of an occupying power..." Khasawneh added.
For his part, Minister of Foreign Affairs and Expatriates, Ayman Safadi, highlighted the efforts made by Jordan, under the leadership of His Majesty King Abdullah II, to prevent any illegal escalatory measures targeting the historical and legal situation in the Al Aqsa Mosque.
Safadi stressed that Jordan stood firmly against attempts to attack Al Aqsa Mosque, pointing to the Jordanian efforts that began before Ramadan and continued throughout to ensure that the historical and legal status quo in occupied Jerusalem is respected and to prevent further attacks.
