Senators oppose Lower House on ASEZ legislation

Ammon News -

The Senate's Financial and Economic Committee on Monday contested the Lower House's position on draft legislation amending the Aqaba Special Economic Zone (ASEZ) draft legislation.

The Lower House has twice turned down a government amendment to the law increasing ASEZ's share of income and sales taxes to 40 per cent, instead of 25 per cent, but the Senate stood by the government’s version to increase the ratio.

If the Senate upholds its financial committee's position, the two chambers will convene in a joint session to try to find common ground.

Recent constitutional changes allow an amendment whereby a joint committee will be formed to settle any contentious issues and come up with a final decision and pass it to the two chambers.
