Center for Strategic Studies: the majority of Jordanians are not interested in politics

Ammon News - A survey conducted by the Center for Strategic Studies at the University of Jordan “Jordanian Foreign Policy” between 15-22/2/2022 on emerging issues in Jordan and the region shows that the majority of Jordanians are not interested in politics, while the majority of Jordanians describe Jordan’s relationship with the United States as good.

The survey also showed that the vast majority of Jordanians do not know who is the current Jordanian Minister of Foreign Affairs and Expatriate.

Middle East issues
The majority of Jordanians are not interested in politics, whereby only (25%) showed their interest, among them (33%) follow the news related to Jordan.

The vast majority of Jordanians (77%) consider the Palestinian cause as the most prominent political issue facing the Middle East. In comparison (12%) believe that the Syrian crisis is the most important political issue that needs a resolution.
Of the overall group of respondents, (46%) consider Israel as the country that poses the most threat to the security of the Arab world, followed by the United States of America and Iran at (10%)each.

When looking at Jordanian national security, (32%) of the Jordanian public considers Israel country that most threaten the security of the state, followed by the United States of America and Iran at (5%) each.

Israel is the country most responsible for the instability in the Middle East region, as (48%) of Jordanians agreed to this, followed by the United States of America and Iran (11%) and (10%), respectively



Jordanian Economic Relations

When asked about Jordan’s largest economic supporter, (37%) of Jordanians consider Saudi Arabia as the main Arab economic supporter, followed by the United States of America as a foreign supporter. Elsewhere, the United Arab Emirates and Qatar followed with (11%) each, and Britain (6%).

Regarding the preferred country for building and strengthening future economic relations, from the Jordanians’ perception, Saudi Arabia came first, followed by: Turkey, Qatar, Egypt, Iraq, UAE, and Syria.



Jordan Foreign Policy: follow-up, knowledge, and performance evaluation

The vast majority of Jordanians (71%) do not know who is the current Jordanian Minister of Foreign Affairs and Expatriate.

More than half of Jordanians do not know whether they are satisfied or dissatisfied with Jordan's foreign policy, while only(35%) of Jordanians expressed their satisfaction with Jordan's foreign policy.

The vast majority of Jordanians (86%) stated that they do not know who makes foreign policy in Jordan. The data also shows that (6%) of Jordanians believe that Jordan's diplomatic ambassadors abroad are responsible for making foreign policy decisions.

The majority of Jordanians (73%, 74%, respectively) believe that the Jordanian Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Jordanian embassies abroad are doing a good job in following up and protecting the interests of Jordanians abroad.


Jordan and the World

For Jordanians, Saudi Arabia is one of Jordan's most prominent allies in the region, followed by Qatar and the United Arab Emirates. While for Jordan's foreign political interests, the majority of Jordanians believe that Saudi Arabia is at the top of the list of countries involved in foreign political affairs, followed by Egypt and the United Arab Emirates.

In regard to global foreign relations, the United States was named the closest ally to Jordan, followed by Britain. From the Jordanians’ perspective, the United States is the non-Arab country with which Jordan shares most of its foreign policy interests, followed by Britain.

Jordanians were more in favor of strengthening the future cooperation with (20%), followed by the United States (11%), Saudi Arabia (9%), Qatar (5%), and the UAE (4%).

Almost half of Jordanians (47%) describe Jordan's position on the Palestinian-Israeli conflict as "irritable."

The majority of Jordanians (81%) support Jordan playing an active role in regional and global efforts related to the Palestinian-Israeli conflict and the Syrian crisis. While the majority of Jordanians support the idea that Jordan should play a secondary (neutral) role in the war in Yemen, the crisis in Sudan, and the Russian-Ukrainian conflict.


Jordan- Israeli Relations

Almost half of Jordanians (48%) describe the recent Jordanian-Israeli relations as good. At the same time, the majority of Jordanians (53%) believe that it is in Jordan's interest to maintain a minimal relationship with Israel. In comparison (81%) of Jordanians oppose the normalization of relations between Israel on the one hand and the Arab countries on the other.

Almost half of Jordanians (44%) support the two-state solution to end the Palestinian-Israeli conflict: the state of Israel and the state of Palestine living side by side on the 1967 borders. Related to this, (42%) of Jordanians believe that this solution is the most realistic and ideal one to end the conflict, while (13%) believethere will never be a solution to the Palestinian-Israeli conflict.


Jordan-Unites State Relations
Although the majority of Jordanians (81%) describe Jordan’s relationship with the United States as good, (88%) of Jordanians are not satisfied with the US policy towards the Arab-Israeli conflict, and only (13%) of Jordanians believe that the United States is serious in finding a solution to this conflict. However, (55%) of Jordanians support strengthening Jordanian-American relations
