Environment minister, WHO official discuss cooperation

Ammon News - Minister of Environment, Muawiya Radaideh, on Wednesday, discussed with Assistant Director-General for Antimicrobial Resistance at the World Health Organization (WHO), Dr. Hanan Balkhi, and her accompanying delegation, support to National Action Plan on Antimicrobial Resistance (NAP-AMR).

Discussions went over ways to enhance joint cooperation on the comprehensive AMR-related action during the years 2022 and 2023, and identify priority areas for targeted support, according to a ministry statement.

Radaideh, in the presence of the WHO representative in Amman, Dr. Jamila Al-Rabi, stressed the importance of developing Jordan's environmental sector and strengthening its capabilities to address antimicrobial resistance challenges, which were identified among 7 initial countries to benefit from a comprehensive technical package to support implementation of National Action Plans (NAP).

Stressing the importance of launching special and intensive awareness-raising programs on the dangers of antimicrobials excessive use, he referred to joint efforts of all the competent and concerned authorities, specifically with regard to the process of using and circulating these substances.

Balkhi, for her part, pointed to the importance of Jordan's role and its ratification of the National Action Plan on Antimicrobial Resistance (NAP-AMR), as the fourth country in the Eastern Mediterranean Region to have ratified the initiative.

Jordan, Balkhi noted, is one of the seven countries that benefit from WHO's technical support to implement the NAP-AMR locally.
