Ammon News - The Social Security Corporation (SSC) said Saturday that some 109,000 women got maternity benefits in 2021 with a total amount of JD12.393 million, an increase of 5 per cent from the previous year.

The SSC clarified that female subscribers are entitled to an allowance equivalent to her last wage at the start of the maternity leave, for the entire period of her absence from work and in accordance with the period prescribed in the applicable labor law (currently ten weeks).

This allowance is paid lump sum after the issuance of the birth certificate, provided that each birth is preceded by a period of subscription to the corporation through her job in a private establishment for a period of no less than 6 months in a row, and also in case of stillbirth, provided that a death certificate of the fetus is presented, it said.

The corporation said the application of maternity benefits was to ensure protection and safety for female subscribers in the private sector and motivate employers to recruit women and not to fire them in case of marriage or imminent entitlement to a paid maternity leave.
