Minister of Environment, Nabil Masarweh, co-chaired the second ministerial meeting on the environment and climate action, with the representative of the European Union, Executive Vice President of the European Commission for the European Green Deal, Frans Timmermans.
This meeting aims to adopt the second ministerial declaration on the environment and climate action, five years after the first ministerial declaration adopted in Athens in 2014.
Masarweh, in the presence of the Jordanian delegation, Egyptian Minister of Environment, Yasmine Fouad, and Secretary-General of the Union for the Mediterranean, Nasser Kamel, said that the adoption of this declaration comes at a time when the Mediterranean region has become an environmental and climatic hotspot.
He added that the report of the Mediterranean Committee for Environment and Climate indicates that the temperature is rising in the Mediterranean region at a rate of 20% and faster than the rate of global warming, pointing out that this calls for taking the necessary measures to confront environmental and climate challenges.
Masarweh explained that this second ministerial declaration for the environment and climate action aims to simulate these accelerating environmental changes and challenges, and to raise the level of ambition and aspirations that the Mediterranean region should pursue.
42 ministers from the Mediterranean countries are participating in this meeting, where participants underlined the need to expedite measures to reduce the effects of climate change on the region, and the need to follow the green and circular economy approach, and raise the efficiency of resources, to obtain sustainable and resilient development to confront these challenges.
On the other hand, Minister of Environment and Timmermans discussed aspects of cooperation and coordination between Jordan and the European Union, especially in the field of climate action, stressing the Kingdom's efforts to shift towards a green economy.
Masarweh pointed out to at the Kingdom's efforts in the field of green growth and climate action, including the preparation of national executive plans for green growth for (2021-2025), which cover six sectors: energy, water, agriculture, waste, tourism, and transportation.
For his part, Timmermans expressed the European Union's readiness to continue cooperation and coordination with the Kingdom, in the areas of climate action and green growth.
