Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs and Expatriates, Ayman Safadi, on Monday held a series of bilateral meetings and discussions, on the sidelines of the 76th session of the United Nations General Assembly.

Safadi held a meeting with the United Kingdom's Foreign Secretary, Liz Truss, who had recently assumed her duties, and congratulated her on assuming her new position.

Safadi said he looked forward to working with his British counterpart in order to strengthen the solid relations and the historical strategic partnership between the two friendly kingdoms.

The two ministers discussed ways to enhance cooperation in the economic, trade, investment and development fields, building on the outcomes of the London Donors Conference held in February 2019.

Both ministers highlighted regional developments, and agreed to continue consultation and coordination regarding them in order to achieve security and stability in the region and serve the common interests of the two friendly countries.

In a separate meeting, Safadi met with the High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy in the European Union and Vice President of the European Commission Josep Borrell, and they reviewed ways to strengthen the strategic partnership between the Kingdom and the European Union, and the importance of continuing coordination and joint action to resolve regional crises.

Safadi thanked the European Union for supporting the development process in the Kingdom and in facing the burdens of hosting Syrian refugees.

Safadi pointed out to the launch of negotiations between the Kingdom and the European Union on the Partnership Priorities Agreement, stressing his aspiration to sign the agreement before the end of this year in conjunction with the convening of the Partnership Council between the Kingdom and the European Union.

With regard to the Palestinian issue, Safadi lauded the European Union's position that adheres to international legitimacy and the two-state solution, which, Safadi said, is the only way to achieve a just, comprehensive and lasting peace in the region.

Safadi also thanked the European Union for its continuous support to the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees (UNRWA), to enable it to continue its services in accordance with its UN mandate.

Borrell commended the Kingdom's role, under the leadership of His Majesty King Abdullah, in promoting security and stability in the region, pointing out that the Kingdom is an important strategic partner of the European Union.

In another meeting, Safadi and UNESCO Director-General Audrey Azoulay discussed frameworks for enhancing the close cooperation between the Kingdom and UNESCO.

Safadi lauded the organization's role in preserving world heritage, stressing the importance of implementing its decisions regarding Jerusalem.

For her part, Azoulay commended the Jordanian role in UNESCO bodies and committees, and praised the Kingdom's role in ensuring the preservation of cultural heritage, congratulating the Kingdom on the inclusion of the city of Salt on the World Heritage List.

In addition, Safadi met yesterday evening with Kuwait's Minister of Foreign Affairs and Minister of State for Cabinet Affair, Sheikh Dr. Ahmed Nasser Al-Mohammed Al-Sabah, within the framework of continuous coordination and consultation between the two brotherly countries, and to strengthen the bonds of brotherly relations that His Majesty King Abdullah and his brother, His Highness Sheikh Nawaf Al-Ahmad Al-Jaber Al-Sabah, are leading the process of developing its prospects.

Safadi also participated in the sixteenth annual ministerial meeting of the International Peace Institute, at a joint invitation of the United Arab Emirates and the friendly Grand Duchy of Luxembourg, and HRH Prince Zeid bin Raad, President of the Institute.
