FM, Lazzarini review efforts to fund UNRWA's operations

Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs and Expatriates, Ayman Safadi, on Thursday discussed with Commissioner-General of the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees (UNRWA), Philippe Lazzarini, the ongoing preparations, in coordination with Sweden, to hold an international conference to support the agency.

Safadi and Lazzarini stressed the importance of the international conference in adopting "effective and sustainable" strategies and plans to ensure the continued support to the agency.

The conference could mobilize the necessary political and financial support to enable UNRWA continue providing its vital services to more than 5 million Palestinian refugees in the health, relief and educational fields, in addition to more than 560,000 students in UNRWA schools is in its five areas of operation, according to its UN mandate, Safadi and Lazzarini said.

In this regard, Safadi stressed the need to continue consultations with international partners to provide sustainable political and financial support to UNRWA in accordance with long-term funding mechanisms that enable the agency to continue providing its vital services to Palestinian refugees "efficiently" without interruption.

Lazzarini, for his part, valued the Kingdom's continuous efforts to provide international financial and political support to the agency.

Lauding support of UNRWA's international partners, Safadi and Lazzarini stressed the importance of the United States' resolution to resume assistance for the agency, which will contribute to meeting UNRWA's needs, which would help it continue to provide its vital services to Palestinian refugees in its areas of operation.

The two officials agreed to maintain coordination and consultation bilaterally and with Sweden on ways to mobilize the necessary international support to enable UNRWA continue providing its vital services to Palestinian refugees as a fundamental pillar of regional stability and security.
