Amman Mayor Yousef Shawarbeh said Saturday that the technical studies and designs of the Bus Rapid Transit project's second phase will commence shortly after the trial run of the first phase of the capital's long-awaited transport system.

He said in an interview with Petra that the World Bank had posted on its website messages by parties interested in the project's second phase.

The mayor said that the success of the public transport system in the capital requires the integration and expansion of the BRT network to cover the whole area of the city.

Shawarbeh explained that the 50-kilometre, four-track second phase includes: first: Yarmouk Street, which starts from Al-Mahatta towards Middle East Roundabout; second, which starts at the Customs Roundabout passing through Al-Quds Street to Naour Bridge and through to the Airport Road and ending up at the Sweileh Station; third, from the Customs Roundabout, Al-Hurriya Street through to the Transmission Signals towards Al-Siddiq Street; fourth is Corridor Abdoun towards the Marj Al-Hamam Intersection.

The public transport system being implemented by the Municipality, he restated, is one that saves time, effort and money and is a real alternative to private cars and a high-quality transport service that helps to protect the environment and reduce traffic congestions.
