Prime Minister Bisher Khasawneh on Sunday called for a speedy introduction of the national billing system which, he said, will channel "real revenue" to the state treasury, allow the Income and Sales Tax Department (ISTD) to access data related to tax burden of proof and speed up return processing.
The prime minister made the remarks during an unplanned visit to ISTD where he checked firsthand on process flow and services provided to taxpayers and service recipients.
He stressed that the relationship between the taxpayer and the ISTD must be built on mutual trust and that both must be driven by the conviction that they are doing their duty to the homeland and its economy.
The premier emphasized that on-site auditing by ISTD personnel to businesses must observe the highest levels of professionalism and objectivity and in accordance with the provisions of the law.
"It is important for the citizen and the business and investment sectors to feel that the Income and Sales Tax Department was found to serve them and that its collections are accurate and objective," Khasawneh said.
He added: "Our main message is that the private sector is a key partner in the development drive and at the same time it is mandated by law with regard to the dues to pay income and sales taxes," stressing that the private sector "has a key role in our quest to make Jordan a home and destination for investments that move the wheel of the economy."
The prime minister underlined the need to interact positively with taxpayer grievances and objections of taxpayers and to strengthen the mechanism for resolving administrative grievances before they reach the judiciary.
